2006 Burnaby Canoe & Kayak Club Programs
Burnaby Canoe & Kayak Club has programs for everyone: for the
young, for the not quite as young, for the beginner paddler, for
the experience paddler, for the person that only has time to paddle
once a week, and for the person that wants to spend most evenings
in a canoe or kayak, enjoying the summer weather. Read this page
to find out more about the programs.
BCKC offers many programs for those of age 8 and older who are
interested in paddle sports. For youth who are new to the sport
of flatwater canoe and kayak we offer 4 programs:
Each of these programs provides an introduction to paddling canoes
and kayaks. The descriptions found under “programs for everyone”
will help determine which program is best suited for your level
of interest. Although most of our club members are involved in developing
their canoe and kayak racing abilities and enjoy participating in
races, our beginner level programs are focused on the participants
having fun with the sport, while learning valuable skills that will
allow them to enjoy paddle sports in any form they choose.

For youth that choose to further develop their skills and focus
on training for racing, there are the Junior Sprint and Development
Sprint programs. While still maintaining a strong focus on safety
and fun, these programs offer increased levels of racing skills
development. To allow athletes to reach their goals, these programs
require more time commitment for both training and racing.

For adults we offer 4 programs:
Do not be scared away by the word “Masters”. It is
an indication of the age of the participant – not the level.
“Masters” is used in the paddling world to describe
anyone over the age of 25. And at BCKC, you will see adults of all
ages paddling – last year, a few of our members in their 60’s
competed at the World Masters Games!
• Drop in sessions are a great way for people to check out
the Club and to try the range of boats available to paddlers without
the commitment of membership.
• Our lessons program provides once per week instruction on
canoe/kayak to adults and families.
• The adult sprint program provides coaching and instruction
for new paddlers as well as for athletes training for competitions.
• The masters war canoe program is for adults of age 25 or
older who would like to train in this uniquely Canadian sport with
the goal of participating in the CANMAS regatta to be held in Regina
on August 27, 2006.

For families we offer 2 programs:
Drop in sessions are a great way for people to check out the Club
and to try the range of boats available to paddlers without the
commitment of membership. Drop in sessions become quite popular
in the summer months so families might choose to enroll in the lessons
program to guarantee quality time in your preferred boats. As well,
children as young as 6 are eligible to participate with their family
in the lessons program provided they are comfortable around and
in water. The lesson programs are limited to 10 persons ensuring
quality instruction from our staff.
